Buds Blossom @ Uni

29th April 2022Michelle Trotter

Today The Buds embarked on a research project at Newcastle University.  The children met with Dr Maarten where he explained what his job entails as a professor at the University.  The Buds were able to become students of their very own research project.  Dr Maarten had been out very early preparing for our arrival and brought back some earth for the children to analyse.  The children used pippets, petri dishes, tweezers and microscopes to carry out their research.  They found some amazing species under the microscope, recording their results as they went.  The children were taken around the university and into a real life laboratory.  They even went on their own expedition to find natural items of interest.

A special thank you to Paula Turner, Dr Maarten and all involved at Newcastle University for making a truly unforgettable experience for our children.

Connecting Schools To Nature

29th April 2022Michelle Trotter

In December 2021 Dunn Street were selected to become part of ‘Connecting Schools to Nature’ project with the British Ecological Society.  As part of the project some scientific research equipment was given to us to carry out our project.

The first part of the project took place in the Spring Term ‘Mammals’.  As part of the project we researched what mammals were, where we might find them and identified mammals that we would find in England.  The first part of the project involved setting up a camera trap, so that we could capture wildlife in our garden.  We then embarked on a mission to clean up our school and local area creating a mathematical challenge of how many pieces of litter we could find.  For this research project we used our litter pickers.  The Buds now fully understand the impact of litter in our world and understand that they can make a difference.

Allowing Buds to Blossom

3rd April 2022Michelle Trotter
Since January  2022 the Allowing Buds to Blossom project has centred around clay
The children have been involved in open ended explorations of clay which have naturally led them into the realms of scientific enquiry pondering the essential nature of clay , where it comes from,  and what we can  do with it.  Paula Turner has led the children through weekly explorations of clay as a transformative material and the children have been deeply absorbed in this experience creating and composing with the clay. The attention of these young learners has been remarkable throughout
” You can make anything with clay ,  you can mould it ” Bobby
To enable us to understand more we have been incredibly fortunate to enlist the skills of ” Dr Maarten” from Newcastle University who has inspired the children with his real life experiences of finding and using clay  in his research to understand the natural world and to travel back in time .
These sorts of experiences are essential to fire up each child’s natural curiosity and confidence to theorise and articulate their ideas.
The Allowing Buds to Blossom Project is dedicated to child led learning giving each child rich learning opportunities and time to develop and express their ideas.

Worms and Wonder

30th March 2022Michelle Trotter

Thinking Thursday continued with another clay exploration.

This week we used our clay to make as many worms as we could.  Before we started we predicted how many we would be able to make.  We then transformed the worms into something new.  This showed us that there is always an alternative way of working, it might not have been our first choice but it showed us that we could still achieve what we set out to do.

Big River

24th March 2022Michelle Trotter

The Nursery and Buds have been exploring their local area.  After looking at maps of the local area and finding human and physical features we decided to walk underwater.  We found out that you cross from South to North underwater.  We also discovered the oldest set of wooden escalators in the whole wide world!! They were built in 1951 and we climbed them, all 143 of them!

Imagine

22nd March 2022Michelle Trotter

This week The Buds have been continuing on their clay journey.

The theme this week was to ‘Imagine’.  The children needed to imagine what they would create and then make it happen.  During and after the exploration the children were asked to think about their plans and if their plans had changed.  The Buds discussed why plans change and that it is ok to change ideas and direction.  In life everything changes.

During the exploration The Buds worked for more than 40 minutes showing perseverance, determination and engagement in their task.
