Year 1 2019/2020

Summer Term – Week 4

22nd June 2020Katie Clough

Hello Year 1,

Well the sun is shining and things are looking up! We are going to focus more on the world’s oceans and Australia this week. Remember, if you are accessing home learning you can also take part in Mrs Clough’s ‘googlemeets’ at 9.30am each day.  In addition, if you would like a paper copy of home learning, you can collect a pack from school each Monday morning.

Miss Bridges

English

This is our book for the week! It shows you just how busy it is down there in the ocean. I wonder if they’re aware of social distancing?! Click the link below and have a listen and watch Commotion in the Ocean.

Now have a go at these lessons….

Monday – Throughout the story, new sea creatures are introduced using short rhyming poems. Can you create your own poem for a sea creature of your choice?

Tuesday – There are many different types of sea creature in the story. Which of the sea creatures is your favourite, and why?

Wednesday – There are facts about each of the sea creatures hidden within the poems. Can you choose a sea creature from the story to research and make a fact file about it?

Thursday – If you could have one of the sea creatures special features or skills for a day, what would you choose, and why? (for example would you have 8 arms or be able to swim underwater for a really long time?)

Friday –See if you can invent your own sea creature and then draw a picture of it. What features would it have? Would it have any special skills?

Celebration Friday!!

19th June 2020lbridges

Happy Friday everyone! I hope everybody had a great week. Here are some of the things we have been up to in our bubble….

We’ve been outside creating and painting ocean animals!

We’ve created fact family kites and then taken them outside to fly.

We’ve created this funky art picture outside our classroom. How colourful!

We have still been taking part in the 30 days wild challenge. We have looked for mini beasts, created nature necklaces and went on a tree rubbing hunt! Have you been doing this at home? I would love to see!!

We even created our own mermaid tails and read out our descriptions to the rest of the class. They were all spectacular.

We have been very busy but we have all really enjoyed it.

Friday celebration time!

Even though we couldn’t all be together we still celebrated all our fantastic achievements this week!

100% Attendance from Caiden, Ronnie, Bentley, Jacob, Leila, and Maddox (and Miss Bridges and Miss Hird!) – well done everyone! We won the attendance award AGAIN! 97% attendance for Year 1. We celebrated by watching ‘The Gruffalo’ and eating popcorn that Mrs Baxter has made. Yum Yum!

Congratulations to Bentley!! I had to give Bentley the award this week for his AMAZING Superhero Maths. He has now completed all of the KS1 questions. WOW! I am so impressed and keep up the wonderful work.

Congratulations to Tyler. You have been working so hard this week with your handwriting! Keep it up.

A massive congratulations to Ronnie, Bentley and Tyler who have all beaten their Superhero Maths characters!! I am so impressed with your maths knowledge. Keep it up!!

Ronnie has mastered his 2 times table! Tyler has mastered his number bonds to 100!

WOW! Bentley has mastered ALL his division facts. He has completed all of the KS1 challenges and will now be completing the KS2 challenges. I better give Mr Hymers a call!! I am super proud of you Bentley. What a fantastic achievement. Batman is up next…

Working from home

Even though I can’t see you in person I can still see what you’re doing. A huge congratulations to Finley in Year 1. He is working at Year 2 level on Lexia. Massive gold star for you.

Another lovely week in Year 1. I have really enjoyed seeing some new faces this week!

Summer Term – Week 8

15th June 2020Katie Clough

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a great weekend. We had a lovely time in school last week; learning our number bonds and planting sunflower seeds. We are continuing our learning around ‘Under the Sea’. Remember, if you are accessing home learning you can also take part in Mrs Clough’s ‘googlemeets’ at 9.30am each day.  In addition, if you would like a paper copy of home learning, you can collect a pack from school each Monday morning.

This is our book for the week! It is a wonderful story about a Mermaid who joined the circus and made lots of great friends when things didn’t quite go her way. Click the link below and have a listen to The Singing Mermaid.

Now have a go at these lessons….

Monday – The mermaid is the main character in the story. Can you write a character description about her, detailing what she looks like, what skills she has and what you know about her personality from the story?

Tuesday – In the story, the mermaid decides to go live at the Circus. Can you make a poster advertising the mermaid’s Circus act?

Wednesday – If you could perform in the Circus, what act would you like to do? Would you need any special skills for your act, such as the ability to juggle, weight lift or balance?

Thursday – Sam Sly convinced the mermaid that she should perform at the Circus. Her friends tried to stop her, but she didn’t listen to them. Can you write a letter to the mermaid persuading her not to go?

Friday – If you could be a mermaid for a day, and have your own tail, where would you swim and what would you do?

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all well. I am back at school this week with some children in Year 1. I know some of you are still working hard at home too so I’ve added some new learning about our topic ‘Under the Sea’. Remember, if you are accessing home learning you can also take part in Mrs Clough’s ‘googlemeets’ at 9.30am each day. She has emailed everyone but if you haven’t received an email, you can email her at kclough@dunnstreet.s-tyneside.sch.uk. She would love to hear from you. This is our book for the week! It is a lovely story about sharing as a hermit crab looks for a new shell. Click the link below and have a listen to Sharing a Shell.

Now have a go at these lessons….

Monday – The tiny hermit crab loves his new shell and doesn’t want to share it at first in the story. Have you got a favourite toy that you really love and find hard to share? Can you draw a picture of it and write a few sentences about what makes it special to you?

Tuesday – See if you can design an even bigger shell for the hermit crab and his friends to share. Either add some labels to it or write a few sentences to describe the new design.

Wednesday – In the story, the hermit crab shares his home with his friends. Who do you share your home with? Can you draw a picture of your home and write about who lives in it with you?

Thursday – The bristle worm is really good at looking after the shell and keeping it clean, to make it feel like home for his friends. How do you help take care of your home?

Friday – The rockpool is the habitat where the 3 sea creatures live. Can you research rockpools and find out what other sea creatures like to live there?

Watch the videos and answer the questions in the booklet below. I wonder what it would be like underwater? What do you think? You could even write a description imagining you are under the water. I loved imagining being somewhere else…

As I stepped into the light blue warm ocean I saw lots of magnificent fish. The first fish was orange and black. It reminded me of Nemo from ‘Finding Nemo’. I swam slowly through bright colours and spiky coral. I wondered what I would see next!

Summer Home Learning Week 6

1st June 2020lbridges

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a lovely half term! I can’t believe it’s June already and that it is our final term in Year 1 together. I miss you all very much. This week we are starting a new topic all about ‘Under the Sea’. Over the next 7 weeks we are going to be learning about oceans and all the fantastic creatures that live in them. In addition, we are going to be looking at my favourite country of all that has the world’s largest coral reef system. Can you guess what it is? I’m not telling you yet!

English

This is our book for the week! It is a fantastic story about a fish that loves to tell fibs. Click the link below and have a listen to Tiddler.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcTQADUywZY

Now have a go at these lessons…

L1 – Tiddler the fish regularly makes up stories about why he is late for school. Can you make up your own story for why he was late one day? Draw a storyboard and explain it to an adult.

L2 – Tiddler was busy dreaming up an excuse as to why he was late, and ended up getting caught in a fisherman’s net and going on a real adventure. His class were worried about where he was and thought he might be lost. Can you make a ‘missing’ poster for Tiddler? Remember you need to describe him and get lots of details about where he went missing.

L3  – Think about the moment when Tiddler was caught in the net. How do you think he was feeling, and why? Can you think of a better word than sad?

L4- Tiddler ended up going on a real life adventure the day he was caught in the net. Can you write a diary entry pretending to be Tiddler, detailing what happened that day?

L5- If you could dream up your own adventure, where would you go, and what would you do? Draw a picture of your own adventure and label it.

Phonics

Have a look at these alternative sounds. Can you read you them? Can you think of any other words that use these alternative sounds? Make a list and draw a picture of each one.

It’s not everyday that you break a World Record…

18th May 2020Michelle Trotter

Like many of us, you may have been enjoying Rob Biddulph’s brilliant Draw with Rob draw along videos, which have amassed a huge online following and now been watched over 2 million times on YouTube).

On May 21st, Rob is going to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the World’s Biggest Art Lesson.

Rob will be live on YouTube at 4.00pm (BST) but in order for the attempt to meet Guinness World Records’ criteria we need participants – young and old –  to register for the free lesson at www.artworldrecords.com and be there for the whole 30 minutes.

The attempt will also help to raise money for those most impacted by COVID-19.  Participants can donate what they can and companies have also begun to pledge financial support. These donations will go towards high impact charities to counter the impact of COVID-19, including stopping the disease’s spread, providing immediate relief to those most impacted and preventing future pandemics.
