An essential part of our home learning process is online learning. It is important that parents, carers and children are aware of what they are being asked to do online, including the sites that they will be asked to access such as Lexia; Reading Plus and TTRockstars. Should you encounter something distressing online while studying at home, we advise you or your child to seek age-appropriate support from the following organisations:

Childline – for support

UK Safer Internet Centre – to report and remove harmful online content

CEOP – for advice on making a report about online abuse

As parents, you may choose to supplement the internet safety information shared by Dunn Street with support from online companies, and in some cases individual tutors. These can include:

Internet Matters – A really useful tool which includes guidance, and the ability to look up parental controls for devices and services in your household

Net-aware – for support for parents and careers from the NSPCC

Parent info – for support for parents and carers to keep their children safe online

Thinkuknow – for advice from the National Crime Agency to stay safe online

UK Safer Internet Centre – advice for parents and carers

Online Research Tips

1) Make your keywords as precise as possible. If you’re looking for information on a Tyrannosaurus Rex, don’t type in “dinosaurs”.
2) Use two or more keywords in your search, but put the most important keywords first. For example, if you wanted information about what the T-Rex ate, you might use the following keywords in this order – Tyrannosaurus Rex diet. The search engine will look for web pages that contain all of these words.
3) Make sure you spell the keywords correctly.
4) Use a child-friendly search engine, such as Kiddle.
5) Include the words – ‘for kids’ – to help make the results more age appropriate.
